What drives the cost

Two similar-looking houses on the same Tauranga street can get quite different quotes. Four things account for most of the difference.

Size and heating capacity

Capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW), and it is the biggest single lever on price. A 2.5 kW unit for a bedroom sits at the bottom of the range; a 7 kW or larger unit for open-plan living sits near the top. It is tempting to buy a smaller unit to save money, but an undersized heat pump runs flat out, costs more to operate and wears out sooner. Getting the size right is where the real value is.

High-wall vs ducted

A high-wall heat pump — the familiar indoor unit mounted near the ceiling — is the most cost-effective way to heat and cool one main space. A ducted system puts the equipment in the ceiling cavity and delivers conditioned air to every room through vents, often with zoning so you can run the bedrooms and living areas separately. Coastal and salt air

If you live in Mount Maunganui, Papamoa or anywhere close to the Bay of Plenty coastline, salt air will corrode a standard outdoor unit well before its time. We fit coastal-rated units with anti-corrosion protection and position them to shelter from the prevailing spray. The coastal-rated model costs more up front and is the cheaper choice over the life of the system, because it avoids an early replacement.

Multi-room, access and electrical

Heating three or four rooms is usually better value as one multi-room system than as several separate installs. On the other side of the ledger: long pipe runs between the indoor and outdoor units, two-storey or awkward access, removing an old unit, and electrical work. Many older Tauranga homes need a new dedicated circuit for a heat pump, and some pre-1990s switchboards need upgrading. All of that electrical work must be done by EWRB-certified electricians in New Zealand, which is one reason we check the switchboard at the measure rather than guessing.

Getting the size right

A useful rule of thumb is about 0.06 kW of heating for every cubic metre of room. For a 25 m² lounge with a standard 2.4 m ceiling, that works out at roughly 3.5–4 kW.

Heat pumps and the Healthy Homes Standards

If you own a rental property in Tauranga or the wider Bay of Plenty, the Healthy Homes Standards require a fixed heater in the main living room that is capable of heating the space to the required temperature. A correctly sized heat pump meets that requirement, which is why it is the most common way landlords comply.
